Research Line 2: System integration and fair governance

Large-scale energy storage technologies inescapably link two formerly distinct sectors: the power sector and the chemical industry. Technologies and policies that closely connect developments in and between these sectors could benefit from synergies, but also increase vulnerabilities of both systems from both a techno-economic and a governance perspective. Furthermore, there will be significant ethical and social implications on, among others, the role of industry versus power industry and networks, investor landscape, regulatory policies, new business models or operating conditions which will change over time. RL2, therefore, aims to develop feasible and responsible system architectures, business models and policy options for integrating large scale energy storage in existing and future energy systems and support the substitution of fossil fuels as raw materials in the industrial sector.
